Last May our three good friends, Jonny Copp, Micah Dash and Wade Johnson, went missing while climbing in China. In the tense early moments of not knowing their fate, their community of friends mounted an international search. Because of this outreach, overnight money and offers to help flowed in. The community that so loved these guys mobilized to do whatever was needed to find our friends.
The Adventure Film office was turned into search headquarters as friends dropped everything they were doing and volunteered countless hours and energy to try to bring our boys home. 6 friends headed to China (Eric & Nick boarded a plane within hours of search effort beginning), leaving another group back in Boulder to run logistics, communications, and fundraising. Sadly, by the time the team of friends/climbers arrived in China, they knew that they'd be heading up the mountain to pay their last respects to Jonny, Micah, and Wade.
In the year since, we've slowly gone back to our lives just as Jonny, Micah, and Wade would have wanted us to, while at the same time growing closer as a community and stronger as individuals. Those boys always brought that out in people!
Now, as we juggle work, life, and of course play, we've finally gotten around to closing the financial books on this experience. Here is an accounting of how much money was raised, used in the search, and now paid out to be used as memorials:
Over the course of those first few weeks, dozens of people came together to volunteer their time and energy and we raised just over $100,000 in online and check donations from over 650 individuals and companies from around the world.
$55,000 was spent on the search and recovery effort in China. This includes flights, visas, travel and expenses for the 6 climbers plus moneys paid to the Sichuan Mountaineering Association in Chengdu, China who immediately mobilized various climbers on our behalf and offered ground support for our climbers.
$18,000 was spent on the individual memorials and for the big group memorials for the community.
After those expenses, there was $42,842.72 left over. We have asked the parents how they would like their son's portion to be disbursed.
- Jonny's portion has been sent to the Jonny Copp Foundation which was started by his sister and parents
- Micah's portion has been sent to his parents and will be distributed by them as they see fit
- Wade's portion has been sent to the Sichuan Mountain Association's rescue fund. The SMA was hugely instrumental in the search.
It doesn't make up for their absence, but these donations will help the memories of our dear friends live on.
If you have any questions about the fund, please don't hesitate to call or email Ben Alexandra (ben@adventurefilm.org) or Mark Reiner (mark@adventurefilm.org)
Thanks again to every who donated time, energy, money or all of the above to the search effort
